Tarrytown 1 / Narrative 4 (Genius)

Helene refers to Eric's musical iconoclasm and genius. She says that it is not the time yet for Ruth's hope and renewal. It is still the time of the breaking of icons. The fire has not yet finished consuming the old rot and converting it to the ash out of which the Phoenix of a new culture and a new art will rise. This she intuits because her voice and body respond so powerfully to Eric's presence and his music. Ruth, she says, mistakenly declines the dark passage, which must be gone through to reach a new light. To stay on this side of the dark passage is to dwell in a false naïve light.

I must tell you, Ruth, when Beethoven's trumpets come and the drums, in my bowels it is the Nazis marching--tara! tara!--all the Aryans of Hell. The thing that will take me through this black tunnel to light is not the song of the Phoenix but my body in Eric's hand, my hair in his fingers, my soul in his music, then will I sing from my heart again.
