Tarrytown 1 / Myth

This is the story of a kind of Eurydice. In this version she is torn between two lovers-the Orphic singer of daylight and the earth above and Hades the master of the Underworld. Can she have it both ways, or indeed MUST she have it both ways, consort with Hades before she can consort with Orpheus? The way down is the way up?

On a shoal of Time a pale tree holds
In its branches the sick sky, in its roots
The war-torn tilth of the Underworld.

Song, blasted and bewitched,
Crawls on barked knees
Toward ever receding light.

Shall a fairy queen with a magic wand
Shuttling between sun and shadow
Weave a multitudinous music?
Or die on Hades’ abysmal breast?
